This term Stage 3 students are studying renewable energy with the ultimate aim of discovering a way to cook a S'more leaving the smallest possible carbon footprint and generating the least amount of greenhouse gases.
We will investigate why it is important to think about our carbon footprint, discover what climate change is and what is causing it before investigating how we use energy and looking for alternatives to fossil fuel generated electricity.

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE MININGBefore we began looking into renewable energy solutions, we investigated the effects of coal mining on the environment - in a most delicious way - using chocolate chip cookies.
Students mined 'coal' in two different sites - one on the coast of North Queensland and the other in the Hunter Valley. A lot of good quality learning was done followed by good quality eating ! |

Renewable energy investigationsWe have looked into wind turbine blade design and investigated solar powered cars in the past weeks.

........ And we have Green S'mores !
The aim of the whole project was to finally cook S'mores without generating a carbon footprint. Students designed and built their own solar ovens using recycled materials. Even though we had to wait for a few weeks for good sunny days ... it was worth it in the end. Check out the inventive designs of the ovens and the delicious mushy s'mores below.
